Habitual Felon Status Lengthens Prison Term for Lincolnton Man

A 45-year-old Lincolnton man will serve seven to 10 years in prison following his conviction for obtaining property by false pretense, uttering a forged instrument and possession of a firearm by a felon along with admitting his habitual felon status during Catawba County Superior Court on Wednesday, April 16, 2026.

The Honorable Clifton H. Smith, Superior Court Judge from Catawba County, imposed terms of the active sentence after Brian Lee Maynor entered a guilty plea to the charges.

Maynor’s sentence length was enhanced from prior felony convictions for possession of methamphetamine (July 2021) in Lincoln County, larceny (January 2015) in Rowan County and obtaining property by false pretense (June 2011) in Iredell County.

The defendant will serve his period of incarceration in custody of the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections.

Maynor went into a Maiden grocery store on January 22, 2024, and purchased tobacco items with a counterfeit $100 bill. He then took the change and items, and left the store, all caught on surveillance video.

During service of a warrant by Catawba County deputies on September 3, 2025, the defendant was seen sitting on a couch with a firearm on his hip. He initially denied having the gun but changed his mind and admitted he had it prior to being taken into custody.

Maynor had a previous conviction for obtaining property by false pretense in Iredell County in June 2011.

Aaron Barnes and Jaleel Smith handled the investigation for Maiden Police Department. Jared Broome handled the case for the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant District Attorney Howard Wellons prosecuted the matter for the State with aid from Legal Assistant Meredith Scott.
