Conover Resident Gets Prison Time For Attempted Trafficking

Ian Maurice McMahon, 30, of Conover, was sentenced to serve seven to 10 years in prison following his conviction for attempted trafficking of fentanyl and methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm by a felon during Catawba County Superior Court on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

The Honorable Donald R. Cureton, Superior Court Judge from Mecklenburg County, imposed terms of the active sentence after McMahon entered the guilty plea.

The defendant will serve his period of incarceration in custody of the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections. He also was ordered to pay fines totaling $5,000.

A tip that the defendant was selling drugs from his home while serving a probationary sentence was reported to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office. On March 27, 2024, a probation officer went to the residence and requested assistance from deputies for a search of the home.

During the search, fentanyl and methamphetamine were found along with other items of paraphernalia, as well as a 9-millimeter handgun, a .25-caliber handgun, multiple firearm magazines and ammunition.

McMahon already was a felon following an April 19, 2023, conviction for possession of methamphetamine in Catawba County.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office handled investigation of the case with assistance from the Catawba Office of Probation and Parole. Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Greer prosecuted the matter for the State with aid from Legal Assistant Stacey London.
