“After a thorough review of body-worn camera footage, dash camera footage, witness interviews and investigative materials compiled by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI), my office has concluded that the use of deadly force in the recent officer-involved shooting in Newton was not legally justified.
“Accordingly, the Catawba County Grand Jury returned a true bill of indictment for Newton Police Officer Carlos Uribe for second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Camden Childers on June 26, 2025.
“The indictment was returned on Monday, July 21, 2025.
“In my six years as District Attorney, I have reviewed approximately 15 officer-involved shootings. In each of those cases, the use of force was found to be legally justified.
“I have great respect for the professionalism and restraint shown by the men and women in law enforcement throughout our district, even in the most dangerous of situations. I recognize the difficulty and gravity of the decisions officers face on a daily basis.
“However, when the line is crossed – when excessive or unlawful force results in a loss of life – my obligation is to the law and to justice. That duty requires accountability, regardless of profession or position.
“Justice is about fairness, due process and equal application of the law.
“No one is above the law, and no one is beneath its protection.”
