Morganton Woman Gets Prison Time For Trafficking Fentanyl

Kayla Marie Whisnant, 36, of Morganton, was sentenced to an active prison term of six to eight years following her plea to trafficking fentanyl during Burke County Superior Court on Monday, January 6, 2025.

The Honorable Tommy Davis, Superior Court Judge from Rutherford County, imposed terms of the active sentence for Whisnant.

The defendant will serve her period of incarceration in custody of the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections. She also will have to pay a mandatory fine of $50,000.

On September 26, 2023, officers with Morganton Department of Public Safety executed a search warrant at the defendant’s Carbon City Road residence. The search led to the discovery and seizure of a trafficking amount of fentanyl, leading to Whisnant’s arrest.

The investigated was handled by Morganton Department of Public Safety. Assistant District Attorney Jason Smith prosecuted the matter for the State.
