Defendant to Register as Sex Offender, Serve Prison Sentence

Omar Christian Regino Vera, 35, of Morganton, was sentenced to an active prison term of three to five years following his conviction for two counts of taking indecent liberties with children.

The Honorable Joseph N. Crosswhite, Superior Court Judge from Iredell County, imposed the prison sentence for Vera after he pleaded guilty to the offenses during Burke County Superior Court on Monday, May 13, 2019.

The defendant will serve his prison sentence in custody of the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections. He will be required to register as a sex offender for a period of 30 years and will be deported upon his release from prison.

The offenses occurred in April 2016 and involved a pair of minor female children, ages 8 and 11 at the time.

Vera committed sex acts on both victims, and their claims were disclosed during forensic interviews with the Gingerbread House Child Advocacy Center in Burke County.

Melanie Robinson led the investigation for the Burke County Sheriff’s Office at the time of the offenses. Assistant District Attorney Michelle Lippert prosecuted the cases for the State.
