State will not Seek Death Penalty in Shooting Death

Prosecutors for the State announced during Catawba County Superior Court on Monday, March 18, 2019, that they will not seek the death penalty in the murder case against 38-year-old Scott Anthony Putnam, of Conover.

Putnam is charged with first-degree murder in the July 24, 2018, shooting death of Anthony Killian. He was arrested and taken into custody the next day.

He also faces charges for attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill for injuries sustained by Roxanne Killian in the same shooting incident.

The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The case remains under investigation by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
